Racing after her--though he hadn't much choice, really--Sam reached for the ladder as soon as she had cleared enough to give him the chance. But he was just slightly too late, and grabbed for the jacket, still tied to the ladder, as the lift gave out from under him. He gripped it tightly and swung into the wall as the elevator began to plummet.
