TEST DRIVE #16 - Turbolifts and Ten Forward

Option 001. Trapped in a Turbolift: This space travel thing is new to you, and you're starting to think the ship is purposely out to get you. A turbolift is just a grandiose name for an elevator, which should be the safest way to travel after all! But someone out there is out to get you, you're sure of it. Because the next thing you know, the lights flicker and the lift grinds to a stop. You're trapped, with whomever was unlucky enough to be in the lift with you.

It could be hours before you're rescued. These turbolifts span the entire massive ship, and don't just travel straight up and down. No, they can travel horizontally, vertically, sometimes even diagonally. You could be stuck between any deck now. There is a small access panel on one of the smooth walls, but how good are you with getting these things to work? Let's not forget that sudden stop tossed everyone around a little, and people could be hurt. Time to put your emergency thinking cap on, and make friends with the people beside you fast. You could be the only way back to freedom.

Conversely, you could slide that pack of cards out of your pocket and start a rousing game of gin rummy. Really it's up to you.

Option 002. Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, minding your own business, and now you're on a spaceship in the middle of a crowded room! It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens, and some of the food is looking rather strange too.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward. A long bar with barstools and a bartender span one side of the room, with a bank of strange computers on that same wall. It looks like people are ordering food and drinks from them. Tables are sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but floor to ceiling windows with a view out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

"It's okay, Mom. It's not your fault." He wasn't hurt but he was clothed in very dirty clothes and probably stank as well. Not that Henry noticed. He was happy to be with one of his mothers again. "Besides, you're family. So we'll always find each other eventually."

He wondered how she'd take that reference. Probably not well considering but it would amuse him. He went back to hugging her. He could worry about the timeline and location issues later.

"At first I wasn't sure, but then, you should see this place!" His face lit up. "Oh boy this place... whooo... I mean at first I thought I'd ended up creating my own little fantasy world here with all this." He gestured wildly with his hands. "But even I couldn't create this." He nearly giggled. It was all too much. "This is real. Really real! Not something on a lot. Real! The doors even make that noise when you go through them."

The short answer, or any useful answer is no. No, Topher doesn't have a clue why he's there.

"I'm not sure who's watching the House. I thought you would be still there. Ooh maybe it's Boyd." He reached for the juice box that had been sat on the bar for him. "Could be the dolls have taken over, when we're away..." He trailed off as he drank. "Or just Echo."

Thea quickly put the puzzle pieces together, the glasses totally made sense now. "Sleep and me are not on the best of terms right now. But then things have to be pretty messy for you too." she softly observed. But Matt would pick up certain things: like the callus on her hand from archery.

If Ben could go white as a sheet, he probably would. "Q... had children?" Consider the Emissary's mind blown! He really could not intellectualize how that... JERK had successfully had offspring. The mother must be a saint.

"Child. There's just one of me. But yeah. After the civil war." Q smiled, amused. "Well you had a child, you didn't think it was only inherent to humans did you?"

"That explains you not knowing Gotham, I'm from late 2015" Kristen offered to Rick. "And your guess is as good as mine." she mused. "But I am a little curious, what kind of scepter were you looking for?" she asked mostly since she was quite curious.

Matt falls silent for a long moment listening to the room full of heartbeats some so different he's wondering if they are even human. He can indeed feel that this young woman's hand tells a story and he very much wants to know what it is. His own hands tell a story too, they are callused from gripping something and strong as if he uses them more then his appearance would suggest. "You have no idea," he says thinking of the still healing wounds hidden under his layers of clothing, "I was just attending a funeral when I was brought here."

"I had just been stabbed." Thea whispered her own confession but leaving out who stabbed her. "So we're both equally pretty messy." she mused. She also felt Matt's calloused covered hand in hers,"But I like to think that maybe you found someone who gets the mess, even if she's still making sense of her own." not knowing all her problems were basically in full view.

Harry strolled around the room, chuckling to himself. He kept his mind as carefully schooled as he could, trying to remember every damn thing he could from those books, that show, and what Ebenezer had told him.

Because... oh man. Really?

He stared around him in wonder, the stars, the aliens, and the familiar sights dancing in his eyes. Of all the voyages into other universes he had experienced, this one beat them all for sheer cool-factor! He didn't even mind that he was trapped here!

Heck! This might well be the vacation he desperately needed!

Steve stops searching for some advantage on the turbolift long enough to take a closer look at the guy he's with. After a few seconds, brow knit, he nods.

"That's the best thing you can do. You want to let the professionals do their job, and that means staying where they can find you and not doing anything to escalate the situation," he recites, almost as if he's reading it from a manual and entirely as if it's exactly the sort of thing he's been told time and time again. And ignored. Because he was a stubborn punk when he was a kid. "How bad's the leg?"

Olan'atar was in the same predicament. One minute he was on his ship, walking towards the holodeck for his daily training, and the next he was... here. In what looked like the main lounge in a Galaxy-class starship. Olan'atar knew it because he'd seen it once or twice in holodeck simulations back at the Academy. Was it a malfunction? He wasn't anywhere close to the holodecks. Then what?

Then he saw no other than Captain Sisko. The Captain Sisko who used to man DS9, when Odo worked there (wasn't he supposed to have disappeared in the Fire Caves right after the Dominion War?). Someone who knew Odo. Olan'atar knew better than to just go at him, though. He was a (rather huge) Jem'Hadar, and Captain Sisko had likely seen enough of them. Besides, he was still holding his kar'takin. He doubted his Starfleet uniform (which, on top of that, was different than most people's here, as they looked 24th century) would do much in his favor.

Nevertheless, Sisko would have had ample time to see him by the time he hesitated. Olan'atar couldn't hide, shroud or just stay here awkwardly. He could only do one thing.

"Captain?"

Nice try, Grant.

She had hoped you wouldn't be smart enough to actually surrender for once.

As he knocks the gun aside she twists in with her free hand, the heel of her palm out and aimed for his nose.

"The only place you have to worry about is a maximum security prison!" she grits, going in for a leg sweep.

Either she likes you, or you've really pissed her off.

Why would he surrender?

He ducks out of the way of her hand but gets cut by her legs. He's not fighting back as hard as he could though.

For very good reasons.

Maria now looks like she's attack some random person. It makes him look better. She drew the gun on him. Everyone saw that.

"Come on, Agent Hill, what did I do?"

If he thinks a couple spandexed security guards are going to stop her from knocking his lights out, he doesn't know her very well at all.

She has her gun trained on him again. Betcha she can shoot you faster than they can save you, Ward.

"You've got real balls, Grant, I'll give you that," she says, smirking.

It's not a nice look.

"I admit it, I didn't see it coming. You can imagine how much that pisses me off."

[The skies open up over the funeral. Thunder rolls and lightning flashes, and something like anger and pain fills the air. And before the funeral is done, another figure stands behind the rest, tears that might be, but are not, raindrops, cascading down his cheeks. A warrior of truth has fallen, and a thunder comes to mourn.

And after that funeral is done, the skies clear, and thunder recedes, and that figure, quiet, but determined, finds Matt Murdoch. And when one is turned to Ten Forward, so is another.

A moment of startlement turns to wariness, and Thor once more turns to this lawyer he has heard much about.]

What is this? Where are we?

Thor was sitting at the window, smiling, watching the room and the stars, and enjoying himself. Far from home, far from the Avengers and Asgard and Loki, Thor was finding himself happy. He had been happy with Jane, and that was the only downside, but he was adaptive, and he was doing just fine, just being himself, and ignoring the sometimes ache that was within him. He'd been around for a little while, but he still felt new here.

Today, he was dressed in casual wear, a neon red top, jeans, and tennis shoes. It felt almost comfortable after his time on Midgard.

He had a giant flagon of meed, which he had made after replicating what he needed from the panels in his rooms. He drank from it and watched the stars shine on these mortals.

If Matt had known an Avenger had been at the funeral he would have been honored to meet them. As it was he was focused into his own grief and that of his friends. It wasn't until he'd been shocked out of it by traveling into space that he realized anyone was even beside him. "I don't know," he said still a little scared about taking a step forward. "One second I was outside and the next....well we aren't. the air doesn't smell right."

[Looking around, curious, worried, and unsure, Thor shook his head.] It is a spaceship of some kind, but I know not what make or who runs it. And it has a tavern in it, within which we stand. There are humans, as well as... people who are not humans."

He looked around, back at the man, then forward. "You are blind, yes? As humans know it?" His people had other words for it, but he was trying to be... Midgardian, more.

Sometimes.

Young Mister Dresden was probably not expecting to bump into the--admittedly eccentric--magical Warden of Chicago on a space ship. Then again, when Marley Jacobs had been engulfed in a gout of dragon fire, she hadn't expected to be transported to the 24th Century. She certainly wasn't expecting to take on another apprentice, though in light of the fact that her nephew was nowhere to be seen, she might not have much of a choice.

Matt turns to the voice and has to use his jangled senses as best he can to figure out how tall his new friend is. "Yes I am. My senses are slightly sharper then a normal blind person's, but the trip here unsettled them so I can't exactly be sure of things at the moment. You sound familiar...have we met before?"

"Nay. I have heard of you, because of your good works. I am Thor Odinsin." He gently caught the man's man with his own, larger one. "I am, however, often on the television."

He glanced to the side. "There is a table with no one at it, standard height, three feet to the cardinal left-forward direction. We could sit there and see if we can find answers."

"Hello," Marley replied, stepping back to get a good look at him. He seemed appropriately awestruck by their surroundings, yet not entirely unhinged by the sudden transportation, and he looked as if he could open doors quite capably. Still, she wasn't going to impose upon him just yet.

"Is it just me, or have you just taken a surprise trip to the future as well?"

"Several. This one is just the most cool." He grinned at her. "I take it that this is your first?"

He bowed to her, awkwardly. "They call em Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure at it at your own risk." His words were respectful but serious. "Welcome to the Enterprise."

Marley nodded. "Usually, it's the past that I have to be careful of, so this should be a refreshing change of pace," she told him. Her brows rose when he introduced himself by his full Name, thinking that he might have thought twice about that if he had ever heard her 'mom voice.' Not that she had any children of her own, but looking after a brood of old, senile vampires who'd been turned when they were scarcely more than children themselves required much the same authority.

"Is that so?" she asked with a chuckle, filing the Name away for future reference. "Well, they call me Marley Jacobs. I'm sure they call me all sorts of less flattering things as well, but I seem to have developed selective hearing over the years." She extended her hand, and added, "I'm very pleased to meet you, Mr. Dresden."
