TEST DRIVE #16 - Turbolifts and Ten Forward

Option 001. Trapped in a Turbolift: This space travel thing is new to you, and you're starting to think the ship is purposely out to get you. A turbolift is just a grandiose name for an elevator, which should be the safest way to travel after all! But someone out there is out to get you, you're sure of it. Because the next thing you know, the lights flicker and the lift grinds to a stop. You're trapped, with whomever was unlucky enough to be in the lift with you.

It could be hours before you're rescued. These turbolifts span the entire massive ship, and don't just travel straight up and down. No, they can travel horizontally, vertically, sometimes even diagonally. You could be stuck between any deck now. There is a small access panel on one of the smooth walls, but how good are you with getting these things to work? Let's not forget that sudden stop tossed everyone around a little, and people could be hurt. Time to put your emergency thinking cap on, and make friends with the people beside you fast. You could be the only way back to freedom.

Conversely, you could slide that pack of cards out of your pocket and start a rousing game of gin rummy. Really it's up to you.

Option 002. Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, minding your own business, and now you're on a spaceship in the middle of a crowded room! It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens, and some of the food is looking rather strange too.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward. A long bar with barstools and a bartender span one side of the room, with a bank of strange computers on that same wall. It looks like people are ordering food and drinks from them. Tables are sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but floor to ceiling windows with a view out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

Not the first time Shadow has been stuck in a turbolift, for certain. Her tail twitches, and her ears lay flat to her skull while she picks herself up off the ground. Teeth bared and claws bared for a moment as she holds onto the wall, the Eeiauoan curses colourfully.

(Ten Forward, taking during the GCPD shooting in "Knock,Knock")

A pop could be heard and a very banged up and disheveled young woman was left it its wake. The last thing Kristen Kringle could remember was someone (maybe Nygma?) slamming her out of the path of flying bullets. "The squad room was being shot up!" she remembered. But beyond a ton of bruises she was in one piece (at least she thinks) as Kristen took a look around. "Ok, this is Nygma levels of freaky since I'm not in the squad room anymore." but she had tried to get off the floor thanks to her skirt getting tangled in a bank of chairs.

'Clearly I have been a bad influence on the Prophets' was the thought that drfted through Ben's head as it seemed they had given him coporeal form once more. He'd spent... an undetermined amonunt of time among the Prophets. Such was the disadvantage of being among a non-linear species. However they had decided he needed some time to process some of what they'd been trying to teach him, and thus he would appear just inside the doors of what looked like a lounge.

'Well it's not Vic's...' But then again what was? That felt like the 1950s, this was definitely 24th century tech. Hell, it made him think of what he'd heard from Worf of Ten Forward. Deciding to see what he was dealing with he made his way to the bar, to order himself a raktajino and see what he could see.

Going from a Japanese high school to a bar in a very futuristic setting in space is a bit of a startling contrast.

Naoto Shirogane stands in the middle of the bar, eyes almost sparkling as she stares out of the window into space, a huge grin on her face. She's trying to ignore the fact that she's standing there in her school uniform; black pants and a black jacket buttoned over a white shirt, looking to almost any comers like a young teenage boy.

Perhaps one of these moments, she'll actually pull herself away and attempt to understand where she is.

What Benjamin will see is the face of a very close and, from his point of view, very dead friend walking into Ten Forward. She's not in uniform, though, which is probably odd to him, but considering the wedding dress she turned up in? This is much, much better.

As it is, she's paying a little attention to everything. Enough that she spots him by the replicator with a raktajino, which was coincidentally exactly what she was going for. How about that? Dax stops for a few seconds.

"I was wondering when you would show up, Benjamin," she teases. "And here everyone says I'm late to everything."

Meanwhile Theo curses in some long ago forgotten Earth language when he realizes his sunglasses have gotten knocked off his face. He's got his eyes closed as he pushes himself up the wall to a standing position.

"You would happen to see my glasses on the ground there, would you?"

Nice place.

Still haven't been able to do anything really for his light sensitivity. Hence the sunglasses.

Trying to figure out just who you were was hard. Especially since she had just met herself for raktajino yesterday, and discovered yet again, she still hates it. Jadzia could have both cups thankyouverymuch. But Ezri was getting off track. She did that a lot. Was it still babbling if you did it to yourself?

But, the ninth Dax host was sitting in Ten Forward, trying to figure out just that when she turned and saw her very dear old friend.

Sorry Ben. Ezri has poor impulse control and is now running toward you."Ben!"

Yeah, of all the people that Ben had ever expected to see in the flesh again was the woman who walked into the room. 'Impossible...' It was the major thought in his head, as his hand rested where his phaser should have been, taking a step back as she spoke. "You know, for the fact that there is a peace treaty among our peoples, I find it extremely poor taste that you could choose that form." He was using that voice that Jadzia knew too well. He didn't believe that it was her.

Now this was a face that Ben was quite happy to see. He had learned enough from the young councelor in the several months she'd had the Dax symbiont that she was a little... manic. But it was in a good way as far as he was concerned. She was just who he needed at the time she came back into his life.

And so he would smile and be waiting for her as she ran over to him. "Dax! It's been a long time."

Dax gave Ben a funny look as she tried to slow down and not run into him. "It hasn't been that long Benjamin. Not that I haven't been stuck here for a while. Wait, has it been a long time?" She narrowed her eyes, looking at her friend intently.

"How long has it been Ben?"

Jadzia's teasing smirk slides clear off her face at Benjamin's reaction. That is not the reaction of an old friend. That is the reaction of someone who didn't expect her to be here. Maybe someone who knows her fate. Dax's expression turns to annoyance and she folds her arms over her chest.

"I thought they'd taken me to a Jem'Hadar prison camp when I first got here," she tells him, lowering her voice. Whether he believes her or not, the Prime Directive still applies. "I'm not a Founder; I'm not part of the Dominion. Do I have to talk about the day you and I found the wormhole to convince you? Or what about the night before my wedding, where you had to talk me back into dealing with Lady Sirella. My zhiantara?"

Dax raises her eyebrows in that way that's half Dax and half Jadzia being the tease that she is. "Tribbles?"

Don't make her talk about going back in time and saving Kirk from that tribble bomb. There's no way the Founders would know about that. She also knows that he met Kirk and she may or may not still be a little pouty about that. Things Dax will never forget.

Though, if none of this will do it, she'll pull out the really personal stuff. Dax knows Benjamin; she can do it.

His eyes wavered for a moment at the things she began to list off. However he was still being a hard headed youngster. He stood with arms behind his back, ever the Starfleet captain in the Dominion War uniform. She'd mentioned some important things, but he knew one thing that might still bring up the emotion he would need to see in her eyes. "Dax, son of Kang."

He remembered when the three Klingon elders had come to his station, and Jadzia had decided to go off on her vendetta, blood oath be damned! He might have expected that out of Curzon, the man was almost a Klingon in Trill skin. But Jadzia, she was not a killer, that's what his heart always told him. However, when she'd come back after hunting the Albino... it killed a small part of him. He looked at her with those eyes he'd used when she'd returned, looking for the same emotions as when she'd left, and returned.

He held his arms out to arrest the forward momentum if needed. She really needed to get some better motor control, otherwise Julian would be fixing her up as Ezri as much as he did when she was Jadzia but for different reasons.

"The last time I saw you was before I left for Bajor, to deal with Dukat." That might say alot, as the only reason the crew would know he survived was because he came to Kasidy.

[Canon point is just after Ben Urich's funeral.]

The soft pop of a new arrival punctured the quiet of Ten Forward. He was a slim man dressed in a black wool coat with a gray scarf around his neck. He is also wearing dark red glasses and clutching a cane. He takes a step and then shakes his head as if he's afraid he'll fall if he finishes the though his foot started.

His head turns from left to right and he makes no effort to remove his glasses or move. "Hello is anyone there," he asks hearing a heart beat coming closer to his position.

Ezri shook her head, without comprehension. "The last time I saw you we had just arrested Lieutenant Chu'lak." And there were probably some things about that she needed to talk to him about. Admit to. Eventually. Now that it was all over. Lying to Ben just didn't seem right. Not that it really was lying. Just....lying by omission. Necessary. She just wish she knew if that was her own decision or Joran's influence.

As for the motor control, she was working on it! Ezri actually signed up for some martial arts classes, in hopes of helping her tap into Dax more. Get more balance.

Ben had to do some mental math on that, this meant that she hadn't helped save Vic's, or gone and gotten captured and dragged off to Cardassia... so many things hadn't happened to her yet. "Then I am ahead of you by several months." He knew the Temporal Prime Directive was most likely in effect right now, so he had to be very careful with what he said for the moment.

Ishka often wanders down to Ten Forward. Bars were a good place to keep on top of everything. Happened everywhere.

Plus, Q had a strange tendency of dumping newcomers in them. Q was a strange one. "At this rate there won't be anyone on the station."

He coughed on his raktajino as he saw the elderly Ferengi woman come in, surprised that she was out of the sight of the former or curent Grand Nagus. "I think Quark would invoke the 173rd Rule of Acquisition if that happened: Once the store is empty, burn it for the insurance and buy a new store where they don't know you're an arsonist."

Thea Queen had been lost in her own head and wild emotions but had been pulled out the second she saw the glasses. "Follow the cherry blossoms." came the gentle and female voice, she knew her perfume had a way of standing out. But something about the stranger struck her, at the moment she just could not explain what it was.

The emotion is there, as swift as if he had punched her in the gut himself. Dax's eyes flash -- pain, fear, worry, loyalty, and all of those conflicting emotions rush past her eyes, the very same ones that he saw when she returned. And just like that day, she can't fully look at him. Kira was right about the whole thing. Killing had changed her. It was hard to explain, even to Benjamin, why she had gone and why she regretted it just as surely as she would have regretted not going.

When Dax lifts her eyes again, there's steel behind the depths, mostly so Jadzia can hold herself together. Dax still shows the pain of that loss and the blood oath that followed. For Dax the symbiont, the Klingon son's loss will never be forgotten.

"The Albino killed him."

And a lot of things had happened later, none of which need to be said unless Benjamin still doesn't believe her.

He felt like a heel, but it was the only way that he could be sure. The Changelings were good at many things, especially infiltration. They had skilled interrogators. Hell he'd almost been tricked by the one who pretended to be O'Brien on Earth. But one thing they could not portray, could not hide, was genuine emotion. He might not have approved of when she'd run off with Kor and Kang and Koloth, but he could understand it. And if he had to be honest with himself, truly honest, if Q had given him a chance to go back to the Battle of Wolf 359, and given him a weapon that could kill Locutus of Borg... he'd have had to thing long and hard about avenging Jennifer.

The Ben Sisko that had arrived on Deep Space Nine not long after her death would have rushed off in an instant. So full of grief and rage over it. The Prophets spoke true when they made him face his pain, recognizing he existed for so long at the place of her death. So in turn he could sense the pain he'd driven her to, as he stepped forward and placed his hands hesitantly and gingerly on her shoulders. "You brought honor to your godson's name." He remembered when she'd died as well, and the trials that Quark, Julian, and Worf had gone through in the hopes to make sure she made it into Stovo'kor. Part of him, the young ensign who'd revered his mentor Curzon, regrets not joining them. "I've missed you so much, Jadzia." There were tears in Ben's eyes as he spoke, as now he got the memories of missing her as he stood over her casket, the utter dispair he'd been driven to by not having his friend there.

[Option 1]

The style of the elevator isn't entirely new to him, however the experience of being stranded in it somewhat is. He's grateful he's not trapped in the dark, but the confined space is discomforting as is the fact he has no idea just how long he's going to be stuck here.

"Lovely. I would have brought my deck of cards if I'd realized I'd end up with time to kill."

[Option 2]

Royce Gold wasn't exactly certain what had happened still, nor why it had come about, but he'd decided that perhaps if he visited the bar and had a couple drinks and listened to the talk around him. Perhaps he'd get lucky and it'd eventually make sense. Or not. Either way, a drink would at least make it easier to deal with. Perhaps he could bribe someone with drinks, or the promise of gold, into giving him answers that actually answered more questions than they created.

One could wish.

"Johnnie Walker, neat." He told the tender as he seated himself on a stool before the bar. Hopefully they had that in stock, if not, well, he'd settle for a different whisky or even a beer if need be.

Henry was bored of being in the catacombs. He was dirty and tired and hungry. With his Keyblade raised, he cautiously walked along a passage he didn't think he'd used yet. But one false move had him slipping down a hole and moments later he was shielding his eyes from the sunlight. At least he'd gotten out of there.

But as he looked up, he realised he wasn't out of the catacombs into Ruby City. This was...somewhere else. A very small space with one other occupant and he quickly sheathed his Keyblade so as not to hurt him. Then he recognised who it was.

"Grandpa!" He smiled and moved to hug the man.

Honor. In the Klingon sense, yes. She had brought honor to her godson's name. That knowledge she can hold onto despite the pain of everything else. Dax understands why Benjamin asked her that in particular. Emotions. It makes sense. That doesn't make it hurt any less.

Jadzia isn't a weepy person by nature. She doesn't cry at the drop of a hat. And Dax certainly doesn't, either. But neither facet of her self can help letting a couple of tears fall. Maybe it's the memory of that godson. Maybe it's remembering Kang and Koloth's honorable deaths because of the Albino. Maybe it's knowing what she does of her future. Her lack of a future. Dax lives on, in someone named Ezri, someone Jadzia has already come to mentor in a way. Dax survives. She'll have to be content with that.

Whatever Benjamin might be expecting in response, Jadzia just meets his gaze, finally nodding as she purses her lips. "I've been here a while, Benjamin. I've missed you, too." And despite this welcome, she really means that. It's been weird to have Ezri and Garak here, to know that they are from her future, that Julian also knew about Ezri. It's harder still to know that Benjamin apparently also is from a time where Ezri is Dax. Jadzia can tell just by his words.

So she decides to spare him that trouble. "I know about Ezri. I've met her. Here. The only thing I don't know... is how. And I'm not sure I want to know."
