TEST DRIVE #18 - Ten Forward & the Low Grav Gymnasium

Option 001. Ten Forward: The first thing you see is a bar. A large, lively bar filled with many different faces and many different smells, sights, and sounds. This is Ten Forward, the Enterprise's off-duty lounge; feel free to get acquainted with your fellow travelers and try to find somebody who's in charge: this is your new home now, after all...

Option 002. The Low-Gravity Gymnasium: The gym is a large room with several alcove-like sections housing the aerobics and martial arts areas, a parrises squares area, an anbo-jyutsu court, and a separate fencing room. Most noteworthy is the area dedicated for zero-gravity training.

Zero-gravity can be, well, kind of weird, because it's not like a gradual loss of the pressure holding you to the floor--you may have taken the turbolifts, just expecting to take a leisurely run, or maybe work out with a treadmill to get in some cardio, but the minute you step into the gym you're floating, as is anything you might have been holding or bringing with you.

What now? Panic, flail, and try to swim through the air back to where the gravity is normal? Do you make the best of it and tough it out to get your exercise in? Or, as we recommend, do you start having fun with the sudden game of weightlessness? Pick your personal scenario and have fun with all the other weightless people.

Boy, this is gonna make hitting the showers after your workout awkward...

"It is. I don't know what it has to do with anything. How did we even get here?"
anexquisitecreature: (you're a dick here's why)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-19 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"No clue."

She's still mad at him, but there's a solidarity in this, and part of her still trusts him. A little bit. They need to stick together.

"I might have left you to Charles' tender mercies and stepped out of your stadium and into... here."

He frowned. "I was blocks away. I had a motel room I was using. I was stepping through the door, except this was inside."

And that didn't quite line up. They were brought very close together, but not in the same moment.
anexquisitecreature: (how about no)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-19 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that doesn't make sense, and her frown echoes his.

"How-- so-- wait. You were still bleeding. Did you not get it seen to?"

Because that's what's most important right now. Health and safety.

"I was going to clean it up," he told her, almost defensively. "But I didn't get into the hotel room."
anexquisitecreature: (really not impressed)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-19 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"So Charles just left you? Bleeding from the neck?"

Ignoring the fact that she'd done the same thing, Raven is quietly indignant.

"For fuck's sake!" One finger is pointed at him. "You're getting that looked at. Somewhere. There's probably a med bay or something, I've seen Star Trekkers or whatever that show was called."

He shrugged a shoulder. "He let me leave. Without being arrested."
anexquisitecreature: (you're a dick here's why)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-19 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh.

"That's... something. I guess."

Still.

"Doesn't explain how we both got here from different points at the same time."

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-20 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
"No, it doesn't. But I expect that's about the most I can expect from Charles anymore. He actually believed that I'd killed the President. He thought I deserved to be stuck in that hole. Though not necessarily for that crime. Or not entirely anyway." He looked at Raven. "He said I took you away from him."
anexquisitecreature: (i can kill you with my brain)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
The flattest of stares is directed at him, and if Charles were here, he'd recognise it as the one that says 'fuck off'. Anyone with a brain knows Erik wouldn't have been quite so stupid back then, though recent events might contradict that point a little. As for the rest...

"He said that." Her brother has a horse that is far too high, and has forgotten that just because he can't use his legs, doesn't mean she can't use hers. "Do you believe him?"

If he does, he's an idiot, and she's done. She'll find her own damn way out of wherever here is.
prefers_magneto: (magneto nonplussed)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-21 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course I don't believe him," Erik retorts.

They may be... whatever they are these days, but they had something once. He's relieved at her 'fuck off' stare, to be honest. Once it was out of his mouth, he realized that she had the opportunity to believe it. Or pretend to. He could sort of deal with her resenting him now, but not with her taking that away.

"I told him why you left, since he didn't seem to get it." He shrugs and checks the napkin, then folds it and reapplies it. "His response was to suggest that you left because I got inside your head." He raises his eyes to find her face again. "I reminded him that that wasn't my power."

The worst part was that, as he remembered it, Charles sent them away. The first time the telepath came at him, he resented the accusation. He'd asked him to be with them. Charles told them to go. It wasn't like he couldn't get in touch with them if he'd changed his mind. But he hadn't. And apparently his version is now that Erik somehow manipulated Raven into letting him abduct her. Absurd. How dare he? And try making her do anything.

He glanced down at the bar again. "I didn't defend it to him beyond that, but that time meant something to me. I took offence. I took offence to what he said and to his years of inaction and to the fact that he thinks I'm some kind of monster because I didn't handle Shaw the way he wanted. I told him what I was going to do. I never misled him. Never."
anexquisitecreature: (tugging on human emotions)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-24 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of her wants to respond to every little thing he says with the sort of snappy comebacks she's got used to delivering, but after a moment, she realises she really wants to know what he thinks, and why.

So when he lifts his gaze to her face, she meets it openly. There's a soft, huffing sort of snort of derision when he points out getting into peoples' heads isn't his power (really, it's just not his power in the same way that it is Charles', but that's not what they're discussing). Whether or not Erik realises, Raven had used his leadership as a model for her actions once he was incarcerated, taking steps that she thought he'd have taken, trying to think if he'd be proud of her progress... after a while, that conscious thought faded and she became much more her own person. That Charles still thought that person could be so easily manipulated was irritating as fuck, really.

That's the most Erik has said to her in... well, ever. Or possibly anyone; he hasn't been out of prison very long.

"I know." Which is kind of galling, but pretty honest. "I-- thanks. For not-- for sticking to your guns, for whatever that's worth, now."

She half wants to trade her water for something harder, but doesn't, and not just because she doesn't trust space vodka.

"It's worth a lot." Coming from her. He glances at her. "I did miss you." That had been the truth, also.

He pulls the napkin from his neck and crumples it up.

He hasn't been out of prison very long and, while it had nothing on his experiences in Auschwitz, it was still largely an exercise in humiliation and ostracization. They didn't even let him have books. So he lived inside his head a lot. What happened with her in Paris, what happened at the White House... they weren't the products of a well-balanced Erik and he hadn't had the chance to find his feet yet. But as much as he'd taught her in their early days together, just as much, she'd leveled him out. She was sensible. Practical. They worked well together because their strengths had complimented each other.

He wants that again in the worst way. It was a sort of acceptance he'd never experienced. Not even with Charles. Charles wanted him to change. She didn't.

"And I'm proud of what you accomplished while I was gone."
anexquisitecreature: (straight no chaser)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-27 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"What, anarchy and vigilantism?"

Her eyes move to where she'd shot him, and while it looks better, she's still not pleased. Another napkin is dipped and offered. It's a weird sort of white flag, he's just going to have to deal with it.

"I'm still pissed at you for shooting me and exposing us to the world at large, but since time travelling usually only works in movies because no one considers paradoxes, I'm going to have to let it go, 'cause it can't be changed and I shot you back. So. Even?"

Unified front against space... people. Jesus fuck, space. What is with her life.

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
A small chuckle of concession.

"I'm pretty sure anarchy and vigilantism is exactly what I taught you." He looks at her as he takes the new napkin. "If you agree we're even, then we're even." He presses the napkin to his neck. "I mean if you really do. Not if you're just saying it."
anexquisitecreature: (beautiful but deadly)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-27 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"It is, but you used more gentle phrasing while you were reeling me in. Lucky I'm a quick study."

And not the little girl Charles kept trying to protect. She misses her brother, but not the way
he hovered. Even though technically, that power is Erik's. Ha.

"Look," she sighs. "There is no point in hanging on to it. You and I both know both situations were stupid, even though we both had really good reasons for doing what we did in each one. It's done. We can't change it, we know why it didn't work... I don't want you for my enemy. Ten years is a long time."

Which he knows better than she.
prefers_magneto: (magneto contemplates)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-27 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"It was a long time." He glances away. "I don't know if it will make you respect me more or less if I tell you how long it took me to realize nobody was coming for me. Probably less. I respect me less. I must have caught a bout of 'hope' from Charles." He glances at her. "But it passed."

He takes a breath and folds the napkin - more something to do with his hands than a necessity - before reapplying it.

"No good deed goes unpunished. Ten years for trying to save a man's life. Finally building something with meaning and then losing it right away. What good has hope ever done anyone?"

But at least, in Shaw's custody, he'd known he was alone. He knew nobody was coming for him. He knew he had no family. In Washington, he'd been fooled.

He looks away.

"That's grim, isn't it?" A small, humourless laugh. "Sorry."
anexquisitecreature: (tugging on human emotions)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-27 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She shakes her head. She'd come for him... but he'd taught her to save those who needed it, not just those she wanted to.

"You were safe. Others weren't. I did what needed to be done."

A fist forms, and she glances down at it before using it to slug him gently in the bicep.

"You taught me that, too... and that you can't rely on hope." And here it is, with actual sincerity. "I'm sorry."
prefers_magneto: (magneto brothers concedes)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
He shook his head. She didn't have to apologize for sticking to their principles.

Except.

"I could have helped you with the ones that weren't safe. ...Once I was slightly less safe."
anexquisitecreature: (moderately chastened)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-28 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, maybe."

She shrugs.

"In hindsight, you probably could have. But at the time, I did what I saw as the only viable option. You were the one for the many, Erik, so I left you there because I knew I could come back."

Then there was all this time-travel bullshit messing up her plans.
prefers_magneto: (magneto erik persists)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-28 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I was in there for ten years. All I did for ten years was age. And when Charles finally came to get me, he still thought I killed the President and all he wanted me to do was convince you to go home with him. I don't even know what it was he planned on doing with me afterwards. I had no intention of finding out."

He glanced at the bar top.

"In the middle of trying to shoot you, I stole the specs for those robots. That's how I knew how to wire them so I could control them." He chanced a glance at her. "Imagine what we could have done together."
anexquisitecreature: (how about no)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-28 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I know that! I spent two of them planning, testing, and throwing away multiple rescue missions, and then some asshole decided mutants were for experimenting on and we had a fucking war, Erik! I had other priorities, and I'm not going to apologise for them again!"

She sighs.

"I don't know what Charles wanted. Except maybe throw me at Hank as some sort of weird way of thanking him for his drug addiction, I don't know."

His glance at her isn't seen, she's avoiding eye contact by shredding another napkin.

But, "I figured that out, actually. But we didn't do that together, because you shot me. So we're back at square one, and I don't want to go around again. It's done, and it's past."
prefers_magneto: (magneto brothers concedes)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-28 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know what Charles' obsession is with sheltering someone who keeps building things that can be used as weapons against us in an effort to make himself just like them."

Erik has never liked Hank or his objectives.

He glanced around the room.

"What are we going to do here?"
anexquisitecreature: (just one girl against the world)

[personal profile] anexquisitecreature 2016-02-28 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe he feels like he failed with me, because I made a decision on my own, so now he needs to prove his way is right."

Oh, that had many layers of bitterness.

She shrugs it off, and follows the path his eyes take.

"Recon sounds like a plan. Find out if we're in a really good hallucination, or if we're really in space."
prefers_magneto: (magneto contemplates)

[personal profile] prefers_magneto 2016-02-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"I wonder if we're free to leave this room," Erik remarks, tossing the napkin onto the bar and heading for the door.
