TEST DRIVE #16 - Turbolifts and Ten Forward

Option 001. Trapped in a Turbolift: This space travel thing is new to you, and you're starting to think the ship is purposely out to get you. A turbolift is just a grandiose name for an elevator, which should be the safest way to travel after all! But someone out there is out to get you, you're sure of it. Because the next thing you know, the lights flicker and the lift grinds to a stop. You're trapped, with whomever was unlucky enough to be in the lift with you.

It could be hours before you're rescued. These turbolifts span the entire massive ship, and don't just travel straight up and down. No, they can travel horizontally, vertically, sometimes even diagonally. You could be stuck between any deck now. There is a small access panel on one of the smooth walls, but how good are you with getting these things to work? Let's not forget that sudden stop tossed everyone around a little, and people could be hurt. Time to put your emergency thinking cap on, and make friends with the people beside you fast. You could be the only way back to freedom.

Conversely, you could slide that pack of cards out of your pocket and start a rousing game of gin rummy. Really it's up to you.

Option 002. Ten Forward: You have no idea what just happened. One minute you were home, minding your own business, and now you're on a spaceship in the middle of a crowded room! It looks like a bar. There are people eating and drinking, some in uniform, others not. Some are clearly aliens, and some of the food is looking rather strange too.

You've managed to land in Ten Forward. A long bar with barstools and a bartender span one side of the room, with a bank of strange computers on that same wall. It looks like people are ordering food and drinks from them. Tables are sprinkled throughout, and the far wall is nothing but floor to ceiling windows with a view out to space. It looks like a nice lounge, low conversation making the room hum.

Better ask some questions and find out where you are, or just tap the closest person on the shoulder and try to make friends. The bar is open.

"You wouldn't believe me," she said dryly, making another grab for it. It made a rude noise and flitted to hide behind his head.

"You might be surprised by what I'd believe." He's unfazed by all the non-humans, after all, and by the fact that they're currently in space. Strange creatures are nothing new.

She arched her brows and rested her palms neatly on the pommels of her daggers. Fine, he wants to hear it, she'll tell it. She smirked, knowing he'd never believe it. "During a chaos storm, possibly the one that made it rain blood, a woman had a difficult birth. Several did. This one gave birth to an egg. The Midwives gave it to me. When a Dragon from another world who had originally been from ours came to squat in my apartment, after turning down every possible offer of luxury and opulence, someone tried to kill her by throwing an arcane bomb in my window. The egg hatched, ate the magic in the bomb and kept us from being as destroyed as my home was." At that she made a sour face, pain and anger there. That had been HER home. Her apartment. Paid for with her pathetic pay chits. It was small and cramped and filthy, and it had been hers. And... and now it was gone.

"A woman laid an egg that had this thing inside it? A human woman?" He supposes it's possible that humans and non-humans might have found a way to reproduce, but such a child would still have some human characteristics.

"A human woman. And the father was human too," she said with a self satisfied smirk. She knew he wouldn't buy it. ****S, she was the one who slept curled around that thing for half a **** year, and she still hardly believed it. "Chaos storms," she said with a shrug, trying to play it off like it was a regular occurrence.

A same she's as bad at acting as she is at lying. Her mind can be read with a glance at her face.

"I haven't ever heard of those." Which is troubling. It seems like he should know what they are.

"No mortals had until it rained blood the first time. Hopefully everyone who is a mortal now will be dead before they come again."

*****ed closed mouthed Barrani and Dragons, not telling them in time to be of any use.

"They weren't fun," she added, making a face. She was irritated just at the memory.

"It sounds like they wouldn't have been."

He remembers that the creature is trying to hide behind him. "Do you need some help catching it?"

"It's probably better to not get it angry. If it bites you, I'll have to strangle it, and I'm not fully certain it can die." Of course, there was some speculation into Kaylin's own mortality at this point.

"Oh." None of that sounds pleasant. "So we should leave it alone then."

"Well you should. If it bites me and I die, I don't have to live with the thing after." she was leaning around him to glare at it. Sad thing is... she's serious.

"But then you'd be dead." That sounds like a drawback here, but then again, what does he know about that?

She shrugged a bit. "You're one of those people who sees the worst in everything aren't you?" She was teasing. Somewhat.

"I'm just one of those people who doesn't want to die for some stupid reason." For a good cause, though, he's well aware of how likely that is.

"I've been informed by the immortals I know that us mere mortals die for stupid reasons all the time, no matter how much those reasons mean to us."
